Amber Alert Issued For Missing 7-Year-Old
There is a state-wide amber alert for a 7-year-old girl who disappeared while walking home from school Monday. Currently, more than 100 deputies in Clay County are searching for Somer Thompson in Orange Park, south of Jacksonville.

"I’m just so worried about her. This is just not like her," said Somer’s mother.

Hundreds of deputies and volunteers are combing Somer Thompson’s neighborhood looking for any clue.

"At this point right now, we are looking for a lost child. We don't know what happened," Clay County Sheriff Rick Beseler said during a news conference.

The 7-year-old was walking home from school Monday, when she ran ahead of the group of children she was with. Somer hasn't been seen since.

Law enforcement is questioning known sexual predators within a five-mile radius. They are also following up on more than 100 tips.

Deputies found out that another little girl was approached just 10 days ago in the same neighborhood by a couple in a blue car, but that child screamed for help and another woman came running, scaring the couple away.

"As I was talking to her, when I turned around and realized she didn't know these people, the car was gone. It was like the car was never even there," the woman said.

"This is one of the many facts that we are looking at in this investigation," Beseler said.

But with no concrete evidence that Somer was abducted, officials are looking everywhere. They are looking in every garage and abandoned car in the neighborhood, just in case the little girl really is lost and in trouble.

The family says the little girl has never run away from home before and investigators say the family does not have a history of abuse.

The second-grader is white, 3-foot-5 and 65 pounds. She had brown hair tied in a pony tail with a red bow and was carrying a purple Hannah Montana backpack and lunch box.

Somer was last seen about 2:45 p.m. Monday heading home from Grove Park Elementary School.

7-year-old Somer Thompson has “disappeared off the face of the earth,” Clay County Sheriff Rick Beseler has admitted in a case that has “baffled” investigators.

Somer’s mom Diena tearfully plead for the girl’s return, telling viewers that Somer’s twin brother was “lost” without her, but investigators have so far found no clues in the girl’s disappearance. Somer was walking home from her school near Jacksonville, FL, with her twin brother and 10-year-old sister when the children had a disagreement. Somer ran ahead of her siblings, disappearing from view, and has not been seen since. As no one witnessed an abduction, an Amber Alert was not issued until the following morning.

Authorities report having interviewed around 60 of the 94 sex offenders living in a three mile radius, and that they plan to expand their scope after turning up no leads in Somer’s disappearance. Beseler urged anyone with information to come forward in hopes of turning up information about Somer’s whereabouts:

“This case is very troubling in that we just don’t have a lot of information,” Beseler said, asking the public for tips. “We really believe that … Somer has been removed from the area.”

Beseler also said:

“We desperately need someone to give us a call,” he said. “All we need is one phone call, one phone call to bring Somer home.”

One of the sadder aspects of this case, in contrast with last week’s “balloon boy” waste of time, is Somer’s mother’s words to her daughter at a press conference
. Diena Thompson, whose child is genuinely missing and endangered, tearfully told Somer through reporters that if she is afraid or apprehensive, that’s she’s not in trouble and to please come home. It’s heartbreaking, and really puts the Heene’s actions into a more callous light, driving home the human impact of diverting law enforcement resources and media coverage.

Body Found During Search For Missing 7-Year-Old Girl

hmmm this is sad..so sad...

Detectives searching for a missing 7-year-old north Florida girl say they have found the body of a young child in a Georgia landfill.Clay County Sheriff Rick Beseler said the body found Wednesday had not been identified but the parents of Somer Thompson have been notified. He originally said it was a girl but then said that had not been determined.Somer vanished on her mile-long walk home from school Monday in Orange Park, near Jacksonville.

She was squabbling with another child, and her sister told her to stop. The girl got upset, walked ahead of the group and wasn't seen again.

I just got the same news story, but in another newspaper from my area. The girl's father lves in Graham, NC, which is close to where I am. I'm sure to get updates on local news.

Yes, Doreen, this is very sad.
What was a 7-year-old girl doing walking a mile from her school by herself anyway?

Authorities have tentatively identified a body found in a Georgia landfill as that of 7-year-old Somer Thompson, a north Florida girl who disappeared on her walk home from school, the sheriff in charge of the case said Thursday.

Sheriff Rick Beseler said the tentative identification was based on clothing and on a birthmark that matched the girl's.The partially covered body of the child was found Wednesday in a Georgia landfill near the Florida state line, after investigators followed garbage trucks leaving the neighborhood where the child disappeared Monday.

Beseler said at a news conference he fears for the community until a suspect is apprehended. He wouldn't talk about what evidence police have recovered, or whether investigators believe the crime was committed by one or more people. He said police have questioned more than 70 registered sex offenders in the area, and that process was continuing.

"I fear for our community until we bring this person in. This is a heinous crime that's been committed," Beseler said. "And we're going to work as hard as we can to make this community safe."

The sheriff said he had told the girl's mother to prepare for the worst, and called her after receiving the news Wednesday night.

"Needless to say, she was absolutely devastated," he said.

"It was the hardest phone call I've ever had to make in my life, and I hope I never have to make another one like that."

An FBI forensic unit is helping process evidence from the landfill in Folkston, Ga., about 48 miles from where the girl disappeared.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation planned an autopsy Thursday in Savannah.

Somer vanished on her mile-long walk home from school in Orange Park. She was squabbling with another child, and her sister told her to stop. The girl got upset, walked ahead of the group and wasn't seen again.

Authorities launched a countywide search involving helicopters, dogs and volunteers walking arm-to-arm through wooded areas.

Orange Park is a suburb of Jacksonville just south of Jacksonville Naval Air Station. The area where the girl disappeared is a heavily populated residential area with homes, apartment complexes and condominiums.

The girl's father, Sam Thompson, lives in Graham, N.C.

another sad ending..

Body Confirmed To Be Missing Girl, Ruled Homicide

This is terrible! whoever did this put this child in the garbage! After 7-year-old Somer Thompson vanished on her way home from school, investigators tailed nine garbage trucks from her neighborhood to a Georgia landfill nearly 50 miles away (see landfill), then methodically picked through the trash as each rig spilled its load.

I'm wondering what made them check the garbage?..Quick thinking/ someone said something? I certainly never heard of this.... Searching through garbage..and finding someone so quickly??

They sorted through 100,000 tons of garbage before their worst fears were realized: Sticking out of the rubbish were a child's lifeless legs.

Sheriff Rick Beseler said the quick discovery of Somer's body on Wednesday, two days after she disappeared, may have saved precious evidence that could lead to her killer.

"Had we not done this tactic, I believe that body would have been buried beneath hundreds of tons of debris, probably would have gone undiscovered forever," he said Thursday.

An autopsy to establish the cause of death was performed Thursday, but authorities would not disclose their findings. At a news conference, Bessler would not say if Somer had been sexually assaulted or answer other questions about the condition of the body.

"I fear for our community until we bring this person in. This is a heinous crime that's been committed," Beseler said. "And we're going to work as hard as we can to make this community safe."Searching landfills is common when children disappear, but it is unusual to try to zero in on them more efficiently by tracking a neighborhood's garbage trucks, said Ernie Allen, president of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

"Time is the enemy in these cases and the sheriff used every resource," Allen said.

The sheriff said police have questioned more than 155 registered sex offenders in the area so far. State online records show a remarkably large number of sex offenders -- 88 -- live in Orange Park, a Jacksonville suburb of about 9,000 people just south of Jacksonville Naval Air Station.

Beseler would not say whether investigators believe the crime was committed by more than one person.

Somer's father and other family members were "torn up" upon hearing the news, aunt Laura Holt said.

As for the killer or killers, "I don't think they deserve to live," Holt said. "I don't think there's anything worse that a person can do -- to kill a child and dump her in the dump like a piece of trash?"

The girl disappeared is a heavily populated residential area about a mile from a stretch of fast-food restaurants and other businesses. Investigators will presumably try to pinpoint the trash bin or garbage can where she was dumped, based on the trash around her and the truck's pickup route.

Tuesday was trash day in Somer's neighborhood, and it was Detective Bruce Owens' idea to track the garbage trucks to the landfill they use in Folkston, Ga., 48 miles way.At that time I realized that this is probably not going to turn out good," the 10-year veteran of the Clay County Sheriff's Office told The Florida Times-Union. But he said he had been expecting to find perhaps a backpack or a piece of clothing, not a body.

The sheriff said he had told the girl's mother, Diena Thompson, to prepare for the worst, and called her after receiving the news Wednesday night.

"Needless to say, she was absolutely devastated," Beseler said. "It was the hardest phone call I've ever had to make in my life, and I hope I never have to make another one like that."

Somer vanished on Monday during her mile-long walk home from school. Authorities said she squabbled with another child and walked ahead of the group. She was last seen outside a vacant house that was on her route home, sheriff's spokeswoman Mary Justino said. Investigators are examining the house for evidence, Justino said.

On Thursday, flowers and dozens of teddy bears were heaped around an oak tree across the street from Somer's some.

Somer "was always happy unless she couldn't find anyone to play with," neighbor Robert Ocain said. "She trusted anybody. Honestly, I think all the kids around here do."

At the tree, Catherine Sullivan held her teary-eyed 5-year-old daughter, Nya Frederick. They drove to the Thompsons' neighborhood from Jacksonville because Sullivan wanted to show her child the dangers of being too friendly with strangers.

"She seemed to understand when I explained to her her mommy wouldn't see her anymore," the mother said.

Hi Doreen
Are those your words in purple letters above? You say you've never heard of this?
Well, my dear, I have some info for you!

It is very easy to drop a body in a dumpster and walk away. It has been done many times. Dumpsters are usually behind stores, in the less visable areas of shopping centers. When the big trash truck comes the driver remains in his seat, while hydraulic arms pick the dumpster up and dumps the contents into the truck. The driver never sees what was in there. When the truck dumps its load in the landfill, what comes out has been compacted, and even when workers are there, a body can go undetected.

It is fortunate in this case that the body was found so soon. Landfills can get very busy, often serving more than one town, and the layers of trash can get very deep in a short time. Usually when a body is found in a landfill it is very old. Cadaver dogs are not effective in a landfill search. It is usually a very expensive and time consuming task, and often unsuccessful.

If the police were not on-the-ball, little Somer would still be missing.

How do I know this? Debbie Key's suspected killer said in his confession that he put her body in a dumpster. Some of us decided to check it out. I can tell you more details, but I think that's all you want.

Somer's Book Bag, Lunchbox Missing
please take a look at the video of somers Bookbag and her lunch bag.

On Saturday, Nov. 7, AMW exclusively released two new clues in the case of 7-year-old Somer Thompson’s murder.

Take a close look at the artist renderings of the book bag and lunchbox that Somer was carrying the day she disappeared.

Police say these two items have not been found, but their discovery could point straight to Somer's killer. If you have information about these items, or think you might have seen them, call our hotline right away at 1-800-CRIME-TV.

So far, there are no suspects and no persons of interest in Somer’s murder.

Police say someone must have seen something the day was abducted on her walk home from school in Orange Park, Fla.

"Lots of traffic," Sheriff Rick Beseler said. "Lots of kids going home on bicycles and walking and it’s just almost amazing that at that time of day a child could just vanish off the face of the earth without anybody seeing anything."

Now, he's asking anyone with information to come forward.

On Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2009, Sheriff Beseler made an appeal to the public for help.

"We have reason to believe that there are individuals who have information pertinent to this investigation who have yet to come forward because they did not feel that their information was important or relevant to this investigation," Beseler said. "Specifically, we're referring to people who may know or associate with the offender in this case."

He asked people to report anyone who has recently changed their behavior in the following ways:

*

- Leaving the area unexpectedly, even if it seems that they have a good reason
*

- Missing work or other routine engagements particularly on the afternoon or night of the incident
*

- Unexplained injuries such as cuts, bruises, particularly on the head, arms and hands
*

- An unnatural interest in the Somer Thompson investigation and paying close attention to the media
*

- Talking about this incident with others
*

- An increase in nervousness or irritability
*

- The sudden shaving of facial hair or head hair or the growing of a mustache or beard
*

- No longer operating their work vehicle for any reason, including reporting it stolen, giving it away or hiding it in a garage
*

- A change in the use of alcohol or cigarettes usage, either increase or decrease

Detectives know the cause of death in Somer's murder, but are not announcing it, for fear of compromising the investigation.
