Native band calls for action on Highway of Tears
Feb, 23 2006 - 12:20 AM
PRINCE GEORGE/CKNW(AM980) - A native band in the Prince George area has issued an urgent call for a community symposium, after the body of another young woman was found near the so-called Highway of Tears.
The Lheidli T'enneh Band says the recent murder of 14 year old Aielah Saric-Auger has stunned aboriginal communities and brought to the forefront critical issues of race, poverty, justice, women's rights, and the isolation of youth.
It's pledging 15-hundred dollars towards the planning of a symposium where all nations upon the Highway of Tears and those most vulnerable to an attack come together to strategize a solution.
The band says professional criminal profilers have stated publicly that many of the murders seem to be the work of a serial killer, but police have downplayed those suggestions.
