Police are focusing on the murder of the mother.
On Wednesday, Denver City Police cancelled the Amber Alert for Mitchell Romero and changed the focus of their investigation.
According to KCBD, police are now focusing on the murder of Mitchell’s mother, Veronica Romero, and have classified the boy as a missing person.
Department of Public Safety Corporal John Gonzalez said “The search has not been dropped for the child. We need to do something different; the Amber Alert is not being effective anymore.”
In defense of their recent decision, Gonzalez said Amber Alerts are only designed for short time periods at the local level. Because Mitchell has been missing for almost a week, authorities believe he may not be in the area in which the Amber Alert was issued.
Gonzalez said “We need to get it out geographically into a larger scale so therefore the Missing Persons Clearinghouse can help us do that, not just locally.” This move will effectively facilitate a nationwide search for Mitchell.
Mitchell is believed to have been abducted by his father, Mario Romero, 34, who’s driving a maroon 2004 GMC Yukon, with Texas license plate number 43WFX6. Mario is 5-foot-7 and weighs approximately 205 pounds.
On Tuesday, Police said they believed Mario may be taking Mitchell to Mexico. Mario is also wanted in connection to Veronica's death.
Mitchell is described as a 3-year-old Hispanic male, 2-foot-8, weighing about 35 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. Anyone with any information in the case is asked to call the Denver City Police Department at 806-592-3516.
