LAKE COUNTY, Fla. -- Investigators in Lake County determined today that remains found inside a bag found by motorists Sunday apparently were of an adult and are not the remains of Trenton Duckett.
Deputies said the human remains were found along Austin Merritt Road in Okahumpka near Groveland after dark Sunday, FLORIDA TODAY news partner WKMG Local 6 reported.
"They pulled over to investigate and upon looking inside the bag they found the remains," Lake County sheriff's Sgt. John Herrell said.
Cadaver dogs and the sheriff's helicopter searched the area today and found a few small bones along a nearby road. However, it was not known if the bones belonged to a human or animal.
"Our search has not produced a whole lot of evidence above and beyond what was found last night," Herrell said. "The circumstances surrounding this discovery are suspicious and we are treating it as such."
A medical examiner collected the remains and is trying to identify them, the report said.
"We are waiting for the findings from the medical examiner's office to give us an idea of the age and possibly sex and perhaps how long the body has been deceased," Herrell said.
There was early speculation that the remains could belong to a missing Trenton but detectives have ruled out the possibility. Trenton had just turned 2 years old when he was reported missing from his home Aug. 26, 2006.
Lake County sheriff's deputies expanded their search for evidence to county Road 48 Monday afternoon.
