Alexander was last seen at his home in the village of Errol, Scotland on the afternoon of November 14, 1999. On the day of his disappearance, Mr Alexander had arranged for a friend to come to his home to buy his motorbike at 5pm. But when the friend arrived there was no sign of Mr Alexander. His black Volvo 440 car was spotted parked in streets close to Perth Royal Infirmary around the time Mr Alexander went missing. It was recovered from Hamilton Place, where witnesses reported seeing it driven and being parked on November 17th. Authorities believe Alexander had no connections in that area.
Alexander had recently lost his job as a long-distance lorry driver, after the firm had failed to retain a contract. He frequented the Penrith Truck Stop in Cumbria and was a "keen" motorcyclist, regularly visiting relatives in Tain, Ross-shire. He also spent time in the Lanarkshire area and at one time he lived in Crieff.
In May, 2008, a man was arrested and charged in connection with the murder of Adam Alexander.
